School
of Nursing PREREQUISITES
International:
5 O levels at grade C or above: should include at least one each of Science,
English, and Maths, or 'A' levels containing one science subject, including
English plus a social science. For
applicants with O levels only,
applicant are recommended to complete a nursing access course prior to
enrolment. All applicants for medical career fields must complete a local police
check in their country of residence at application prior to final acceptance and
prior to entering a clinical environment. Applicants with prior convictions for
other than traffic violations or other minor incidents must apply for a waiver
for enrolment, and the University can not guarantee that they will qualify for
professional licensure upon completion of the Nursing or other licensable
medical program.
Graduate enrollment, a minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher in an undergraduate nursing
program, plus 2 letters of
recommendation, and a recent Police check to ensure absence of adverse actions
related to any major offenses or incidents. Major traffic incidents resulting in
death or injury of any individual must be disclosed.
Minor incidents such as traffic violations should be reported, but are
generally not disqualifying for entry into most medical career fields.
Bachelor
of Science in Nursing...
The
School of Nursing conducts a conventional 4 year , > 2500 hour resident
course in Nursing. Graduates of this program must apply to the Commission for Graduates of
Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) prior to sitting for licensure examinations in
the USA, and for the corresponding CARICOM examination prior to licensure in
CARICOM Nations. This 8 semester
program may be completed in as little as 3 years with continuous enrolment,
assuming successful completion of an average of 17 credit hours per semester and
a total of 132 credit hours in professional nursing and related subjects during
the period of enrolment. A
minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required for graduation and award of the
bachelor's degree in Nursing.
When
completed as a continuous 3 year / 8 semester program, the first year of the
program includes integrated courses in Introductory Nursing Arts and Sciences,
Medical and Nursing Terminology, General and Organic Chemistry, Written
Expression, General, Abnormal, and Cultural Psychology, General and Human
Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Fitness and Health, Medical
Microbiology, Ethics in healthcare, and Medical Maths for a total of 49 credit
hours.
The
second year of the program includes continued instruction and practical
experience in Clinical Nursing skills, Anatomy & Physiology II, Microbiology
and Infectious Disease, Drugs and Solutions, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology,
Medical & Surgical Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Specialized and Alternative
Nursing Care specialties, and Nursing Leadership. Total 49 Credit Hours.
The
Third and final year of the Baccalaureate Nursing program contains courses and
modules in Emerging and Contemporary issues in Nursing Practice, Geriatric
Nursing, Nursing Administration, Medical and Legal aspects of Nursing Practice,
Community Nursing Practicum, and Senior Nursing Seminar, for a total of 34
credit hours. The BSN program can
also be conveniently divided into 4 or more academic years, but must be
completed within 7 years of origination of study.
Masters
of Nursing (MSN) and MSN-Nurse Practitioner (MSN-NP) Program…
Students
with a graduating GPA of 2.75 or above may apply for the 5th year
Masters in Nursing program. The
Graduate year may be completed in as little as 2 semesters, for a total of 36
credit hours and contains the following graduate level modules and courses:
Graduate
Level Courses and Modules in Life Span Nursing, Advanced Nutrition or
Nutritional Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Advanced Physiology, Pathophysiology or
Pathology (General or Clinical Pathology), Advanced Nursing Training in a
designated area of clinical specialization,
Graduate Seminar, Nursing Grand Rounds,
and an approved topic in Nursing Research.
The requirements for the MSN must be completed within 5 years of
origination of the MSN program, and must result in a GPA of 3.0 or higher for
award of the MSN degree. The MSN program may be combined with the MSN-Nurse
Practitioner program for those students who complete an additional semester (12
credits) of supervised clinical training in a Nurse Practitioner specialty.
