The Medical Curriculum & Academic Programs

USAT presents an innovative MD curriculum that conveniently incorporates critical areas of nutrition, complimentary and alternative medicine, and physical medicine into the traditional basic sciences and clinical years, and introduces clinical exposure from the first semester. The Basic sciences consists of 2 blocks of coursework (I=Basic sciences and II=preclinical sciences) comprising a 20 month / 80 week duration, and the clinical years are also conveniently divided into two blocks of instruction (III=core specialties and IV=elective specialties) comprising a total of 20 months/80 weeks of clinical training.

Basic Sciences, Block I: Three semesters, 48 weeks, 68 credits

Block Ia: Integrated Modules in Gross Anatomy, Embryology,Medical Physics, Histology, Nutritional Sciences, and Medical Terminology,  Total 23 credit hours.

Block Ib: Integrated Modules in Medical Physiology I, Biochemistry & Physiologic Chemistry, Cell Biology, Medical Imaging, Neurosciences, and Biostatistics, Total 23 Credit Hours.

Block Ic: Integrated Modules in Medical Physiology (II) & Pathophysiology, Microbiology (immunology & virology), Pharmacology I (topics in Pharmacodynamics,  Pharmacokinetics), Psychology & Behavioural Sciences, Nutritional Biochemistry, and Molecular Genetics Total 23 credit hours.

Note:  Students may apply the credits earned in Blocks Ia-c toward award of the degree of  Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences.  A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 is required for award of a Bachelor's degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for progression to Block II.

Block II: 2 semesters,  44 credit hours

Block IIa: Integrated Modules in Physical Diagnosis, Clinical Pathology, Advanced Pharmacology & Medical Toxicology, Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Disease, and Introduction to Medical Seminar, total 22 credits.

Block IIb: Integrated Modules in Intro to Clinical Medicine,  Clinical Pathology Epidemiology, Public Health, & Preventive Medicine,  Pharmacognosy Complimentary, & Alternative Therapies, Introduction to Medical Grand Rounds,  and Biological Basis of Clinical Medicine, total 22 credits.

Note: A comprehensive Examination will be administered at the completion of Block IIb.  Successful completion of Step I of the USMLE may substitute for the Comprehensive Examination. A certificate of completion of Basic Medical Sciences will be issued upon successful completion of Basic Medical Sciences addition, qualified students who hold a Bachelor's degree may apply the graduate credits earned in medical Basic Sciences toward a non-thesis Master of Sciences Degree, with a specialty in Medical Sciences. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for progression to Block III and beyond, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in Graduate Level Coursework is required for award of the Master of Science Degree in any specialty.

Block III: Clinical Core Specialties, 4 terms, 50 weeks

Block IIIClinical Rotations in Family Medicine/General Practice, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine/ICU,  4 to 12 weeks / individual specialty.

Block IV:  Clinical Elective Specialties, 2.5 terms, 30 weeks

Block IVClinical Rotations in various electives, including Tropical Medicine, Radiology, Dermatology, Physical & Integrative Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Infectious Disease, or others as selected by the student.

Note:   Clinical Specialties may be taken in any order, but must total not less than 80 weeks. A minimum GPA of 2.5 in clinical specialties (Blocks III-IV) is required for Award of the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.   Students who enroll in a combined double doctorate program that combines an academic degree (DPH, DSc, or PhD) with a clinical degree are expected to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above throughout the course of their graduate studies.

Note 3: Undergraduate courses are those courses numbered 100-499, and Graduate level courses are those numbered 500-999.  The majority of the courses in the Medical (MD, DO, NMD, MBBS) Curricula are numbered > 500 and therefore presented at a Graduate level.

Note 4: Students may apply for award of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree after completion of a minimum of 60 weeks of clinical training, including cores in Medicine, Surgery, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine/urgent care, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry
